三打令牌 The Third Crack

The Daoist, agitated in his heart, gripped his precious sword, loosed his hair, chanted his spell, burned a talisman, and struck the command-tablet down once again.

Deictic 那道士: 那 = nà. 心中: 中 = zhōng. 解散了頭髮: 散 = sàn, “to loosen.” Durative 念著咒: 著 = zhe. Directional 打將下去: 將 = jiāng.

And there, within the Southern Gate of Heaven, Marshal Deng, leading the Thunder Lord and the Lightning Mother, came into the mid-air and, facing Pilgrim, made their salutes.

Deictic 那南天門: 那 = nà. Durative 領著 / 迎著: 著 = zhe (×2). 鄧天君 Marshal Deng; 雷公電母 the Thunder Lord and Lightning Mother. 當空: 當 = dāng.

總評 Commentary

The immortal's third attempt is his most frantic — unbound hair, drawn sword, the full apparatus of the Five-Thunder rite — and it does bring the great thunder-deities down. But they descend to salute Wukong, not to serve the Daoist: even the summoning that “works” works for the wrong master, which is the passage's quiet irony as it raises the stakes to thunder and lightning.
