Below, two or three Daoists took up a talisman-bearing effigy and a document and likewise set fire to them.

總評 Commentary

The rite appears to work: the first stroke of the tablet is answered by a rising wind, exactly as the immortal foretold. The narrative lets the illusion of Daoist success stand for a beat — long enough for Bajie to panic in the next passage — before revealing, from Wukong's side, how the machinery is really to be worked.
