臨凡 “to descend to the mortal world.” 好歹 “come what may, by hook or crook.” 長生: = cháng. 法兒: suffixal = er, “a method, a means.”


總評 Commentary

The scene's comedy sharpens: Bajie panics at the exposure, but Wukong — with a warning pinch — seizes the role of a descended god and improvises a plausible divine excuse (“we left the elixir at home”). The Daoists' terror is entirely sincere, which is what makes it funny; their piety has left them defenceless against exactly this kind of imposture.
