暫息雷霆 “Stay Your Wrath”

逐句解 Line by line

sūnshèngzhǎngkāiyánshēnggāojiàodào:「xiàzànléitíngzhīróngsēngděngzòu。」 sūnshèngzhǎngkāiyánshēnggāojiàodào:「xiàzànléitíngzhīróngsēngděngzòu。」

The Great Sage pressed his palms together, spoke up, and cried out in a stern, loud voice, “Your Majesty, calm for a moment your thunderous wrath, and allow us monks to make our plea.”

合掌 “to press the palms together” (añjali). 厲聲 “in a stern voice.” 雷霆之怒 “thunderbolt-fury.” 容僧等啟奏 “allow us monks to state our case.”

guówángdào:「chōngzhuàngleguóshīguóshīzhīyányǒuchàmiù?」 guówángdào:「chōngzhuàngleguóshīguóshīzhīyányǒuchàmiù?」

The king said, “You have affronted the Preceptors; and could there be any error in what the Preceptors say?”

衝撞 “to offend, affront.” 豈有差謬: = chà (差謬 “error, discrepancy”).


總評 Commentary

Wukong seizes the initiative with the courtroom's oldest move — asking leave to answer the charge — and the king's reply frames the difficulty squarely: to doubt the accusation is to doubt the Preceptors themselves. What follows is Wukong's point-by-point demolition of the indictment, conducted entirely within the forms of a legal defence.
