The Primal Spirit Questions the Wind
Line by line
Good Great Sage! He plucked out a strand of hair, blew on it a breath of immortal air, and cried, “Change!”
吹口仙氣 “blew a puff of immortal breath.”
It changed at once into a false Pilgrim, standing there below the Tang Monk.
(4th tone). A body-double left in his place.
His true body sent forth its primal spirit, rushed up into the mid-air, and cried aloud, “That one in charge of the wind — which of you is it?”
元神 “the primal spirit” (the yang-soul sent forth). 那司風的: deictic 那 = nà (“that one who governs wind”); 是那個: interrogative 那 = nǎ (“which one?”).
In alarm, Granny Wind pinched shut her cloth bag, Xun the Second knotted fast the mouth-cord, and both came forward to make their bows.
Xun the Second (a wind-deity). 劄住口繩 (zhá) “to knot fast the mouth-cord” of the wind-sack.
The mechanism of the trick is revealed: Wukong leaves a double below and projects his primal spirit skyward to confront the very deities the altar is meant to compel. The wind-gods' instant, frightened deference — stoppering the wind-bag at his word — exposes the whole rite as borrowed authority. The Daoist commands by talisman; the Great Sage commands by rank, and outranks him.
