反助妖道 “Why Aid the Demon?”

行xíng者zhě道dào：「我wǒ保bǎo護hù唐táng朝cháo聖shèng僧sēng西xī天tiān取qǔ經jīng，路lù過guò車chē遲chí國guó，與yǔ那nà妖yāo道dào賭dǔ勝shèng祈qí雨yǔ，你nǐ怎zěn麼me不bú助zhù老lǎo孫sūn，反fǎn助zhù那nà道dào士shì？我wǒ且qiě饒ráo你nǐ，把bǎ風fēng收shōu了le；若ruò有yǒu一yì些xiē風fēng兒er，把bǎ那nà道dào士shì的de鬍hú子zi吹chuī得de動dòng動dòng，各gè打dǎ二èr十shí鐵tiě棒bàng。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「我wǒ保bǎo护hù唐táng朝cháo圣shèng僧sēng西xī天tiān取qǔ经jīng，路lù过guò车chē迟chí国guó，与yǔ那nà妖yāo道dào赌dǔ胜shèng祈qí雨yǔ，你nǐ怎zěn么me不bú助zhù老lǎo孙sūn，反fǎn助zhù那nà道dào士shì？我wǒ且qiě饶ráo你nǐ，把bǎ风fēng收shōu了le；若ruò有yǒu一yì些xiē风fēng儿er，把bǎ那nà道dào士shì的de胡hú子zi吹chuī得de动dòng动dòng，各gè打dǎ二èr十shí铁tiě棒bàng。」

Pilgrim said, “I am guarding a holy monk of the Tang court on his way to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven; passing through Cart-Slow Kingdom, we are wagering a rain-contest against those demon-Daoists. Why do you not help old Sun, but help that Daoist instead?

唐朝: 朝 = cháo. Deictic 那妖道 / 那道士: 那 = nà (×2). 不助: 不 = bú before 助 (4th tone).

我wǒ且qiě饒ráo你nǐ，把bǎ風fēng收shōu了le；我wǒ且qiě饶ráo你nǐ，把bǎ风fēng收shōu了le；

I will pardon you this once — gather up the wind;

我且饒你 “I pardon you for now.” 把風收了: 了 = le.

若ruò有yǒu一yì些xiē風fēng兒er，把bǎ那nà道dào士shì的de鬍hú子zi吹chuī得de動dòng動dòng，各gè打dǎ二èr十shí鐵tiě棒bàng。」若ruò有yǒu一yì些xiē风fēng儿er，把bǎ那nà道dào士shì的de胡hú子zi吹chuī得de动dòng动dòng，各gè打dǎ二èr十shí铁tiě棒bàng。」

but if there is the least breath of wind, enough to stir that Daoist's beard, you shall each be given twenty strokes of the iron rod.”

一些風兒: 一 = yì before 些; suffixal 兒 = er. Deictic 那道士: 那 = nà. 鬍子: suffixal 子 = zi. 吹得動動: 得 = de (complement).

總評 Commentary

Wukong invokes his commission — escort of the scripture-pilgrim — as the ground of his authority over the elements, and backs it with a threat of the rod. The comic specificity of the warning (not a breath enough to stir the Daoist's beard) both asserts total control and lands the humiliation squarely on his rival: the immortal will strike his tablet to no effect at all.
