回嗔作喜 Wrath Turned to Cheer

認得: 得 = dé. 那師父: deictic 那 = nà. 好人家兒女: standalone 兒 (兒女) = ér. 教我馱著: causative 教 = jiào; durative 著 = zhe.

It was old Sun who planned to deal with him, and he then worked a weight-magic to crush me.

弄個重身法: 重 = zhòng ("weight-").

It was I who smashed him to fragments.

將他摜得粉碎: disposal 將 = jiāng; complement 得 = de.

He must then have used a corpse-loosing method — stirred up a whirlwind, and carried my Master off.

解屍之法 = "a corpse-loosing technique" (解屍/解尸), the shed-body escape. 攝去 = "snatched away."

For this reason I blamed him for never listening to me, and so, disheartened and low, I said we should each go our separate ways.

不聽我說: mechanical sandhi leaves 不 as bù before 聽 (1st tone). 各人散了: 散 = sàn.

But since you, worthy brother, have such sincere intent, it puts old Sun in a hard place either way.

既是賢弟: 既是 = "since." 進退兩難: 難 = nán ("hard, difficult").

──八bā戒jiè，你nǐ端duān的de要yào怎zěn的de處chù？」 ──八bā戒jiè，你nǐ端duān的de要yào怎zěn的de处chù？」

— Eight Rules, what in truth do you mean to do about it?"

你端的要怎的處: 端的 = "in truth, really"; 處 = chù ("deal with it").

Eight Rules said: "Just now I spoke recklessly out of turn — in truth we shouldn't break up.

沒及奈何: 沒 = méi. 還信沙弟: 還 = hái ("still, rather"). 去尋那妖怪: deictic 那 = nà.

Pilgrim then turned his anger to cheer and said: "Brothers, let's join our hearts as one again, gather up the luggage and horse, go up the mountain to find the monster, and rescue the Master."

回嗔作喜 = "to turn wrath to joy." 還要來結同心: 還 = hái ("again"). 收拾了行李: aspect 了 = le; 行 = xíng (行李 "luggage").

總評 Commentary

Wukong's account, delivered now to his brethren, is the chapter's own recapitulation — the whole sequence of the false child, the weighing, the smashing, the corpse-loosing, and the abduction, laid out plainly at last from the one vantage that understood it all along. In telling it he also confesses the real source of his talk of parting: not cowardice but discouragement, the accumulated hurt of being right and unheeded, blamed and threatened with the fillet for the very perceptions that would have saved the Master. The admission (意懶心灰, "disheartened and low") is an unusually candid moment for the Great Sage, and it humanizes the flare of despair that opened the scene.

The turn from despair to resolve is completed by Bajie's retraction and Wukong's 回嗔作喜 ("turning wrath to cheer"). Bajie, whose appetite helped spring the trap and whose readiness to quit nearly ended the quest, now owns his reckless talk and comes round to Sha Monk's counsel; and Wukong, his mood restored, calls the party to knit their hearts together again and take up the search. The little arc — proposed dissolution, covenantal reminder, candid confession, restored unity — re-forges the band of four for the rescue to come, and the chapter's second half turns decisively from the loss of the Master to the hunt for the demon who took him. The reunion of purpose is the necessary hinge: only a party made whole again can mount the assault on the Fire-Cloud Cave that the coming chapters will require.
