In no long time they came to the borders of the Golden Helm Mountain.

到了: = le. 不多時 is the narrative's standard elision of a journey; the somersault cloud has covered the distance to Vulture Peak and back inside two passages.

Devarāja Li saw them, led his company out to meet them, and set out the whole affair.

Deictic 那李天王: = ; 見了: = le; 相迎: = xiāng.

The arhats said: "No need for a long recital. Go quickly and call him out."

絮繁 = "long-winded, prolix." The arhats have their instructions and no interest in the history; they are the only party in the chapter in a hurry.

The Great Sage clenched his fists, came to the cave mouth and railed: "Bloated foul monster, come out quickly and settle which is above and which below with your Grandfather Sun!"

捻著: durative = zhe. 腯潑 is "fat, well-fed," of an animal fit for sacrifice, and the abuse keeps the ox in view. 孫外公 is Pilgrim's habitual self-promotion in the kinship terms of insult.

The little imps went flying off again to report.

Deictic 那小妖: = . The third such errand in the chapter, and the narrator does not vary the sentence.

wángdào:「zhèzéihóuyòuzhīqǐngshuíláichāngjué。」 wángdào:「zhèzéihóuyòuzhīqǐngshuíláichāngjué。」

The demon king said in a rage: "That thieving ape has fetched somebody else to make a riot here, and there is no knowing who."

猖獗 here is transitive in effect — "to run riot against me." The demon's assumption is reasonable and wrong: this time the help is neither a general nor an element.

xiǎoyāodào:「gèngshénjiàngzhǐrén。」 xiǎoyāodào:「gèngshénjiàngzhǐrén。」

The little imps said: "There is no general with him at all — only the one of him."

更無甚將: = gèng, = shén ("any at all"), = jiàng (the rank). The imps are counting the wrong thing: the eighteen arhats standing by are not generals.

wángdào:「gēnbàngzibèishōuláizěnmequèyòuréndàogǎnshìyòuyàozǒuquán?」 wángdào:「gēnbàngzibèishōuláizěnmequèyòuréndàogǎnshìyòuyàozǒuquán?」

The demon king said: "That rod of his I have already taken in. How is it he comes here again all alone? Can he be wanting a bout of fists?"

Deictic 那根棒子: = , suffix = zi. 走拳 = "to go at it with fists," unarmed sparring — which is exactly what Pilgrim is about to do.

suídàilebǎobèichāoqiāngzàishǒujiàoxiǎoyāobānkāishíkuàitiàochūménláidào:「zéihóufānjiā便piányijiùgāihuíyòuláiyāo?」 suídàilebǎobèichāoqiāngzàishǒujiàoxiǎoyāobānkāishíkuàitiàochūménláidào:「zéihóufānjiā便piányijiùgāihuíyòuláiyāo?」

He took the treasure with him as usual, gripped his spear, told the little imps to shift the stones away, sprang out of the gate and railed: "Thieving ape! Time and again you have got no good of it. You ought to keep out of my way — how is it you come bawling here again?"

綽槍: = chāo ("to snatch up, to grip"); pypinyin gives chuò and the reading is guarded as an invariant. 搬開石塊: = shí — the stones walled up at the end of the last battle. 吆喝: = , on the chapter-wide ruling for this graph; modern dictionaries lexicalize the compound as yāohe with a neutral second syllable.

xíngzhědào:「zhèshíhǎodǎiruòyàowàigōngláichúfēilexiángpéilesòngchūshīshījiùráo。」 xíngzhědào:「zhèshíhǎodǎiruòyàowàigōngláichúfēilexiángpéilesòngchūshīshījiùráo。」

Pilgrim said: "This foul fiend knows nothing of what is good for him! If you want your Grandfather to stop coming, there is no way but to submit and yield, make your apologies, and send out my master and my fellow disciples — then I will let you off."

服了降: = xiáng ("to submit"), not jiàng; both = le, positional. The terms are a formal surrender: submission, apology, restitution.

guàidào:「sānshàngbèijìnglejiǔ便biànyàozǎishāháishídǎoleba。」 guàidào:「sānshàngbèijìnglejiǔ便biànyàozǎishāháishídǎoleba。」

The monster said: "Those three monks of yours have been washed clean already, and before long they will be butchered. Do you still not know when to stand and when to fall? Be off with you."

Both (那怪, 你那三個) = , positional. 識起倒: = dǎo in this binome of rise and fall ("to know what's what"), not the adversative dào. Sentence-final = ba. 洗淨 is the word for washing meat before cooking.

總評 Commentary

The exchange is the chapter's fourth challenge at this gate and the narrator writes it almost as a formula — the imps run in to report, the demon comes out with the treasure on him, the two of them curse each other in the established terms. What is new is the intelligence failure on both sides. The imps report that there is no general with him, only the one of him, which is true and useless: the eighteen arhats standing by are not generals, and the demon comes out expecting a bout of fists.

The horror is in one word. 洗淨 — washed clean — is what one does to meat before cooking it, and the demon uses it of Tripitaka, Eight Rules and Sha Monk in the same breath as his advice that Pilgrim should learn when to stand and when to fall. The chapter has been running its comedy of professional burglars and squabbling gods for four thousand graphs, and it drops this in without raising its voice. Pilgrim's terms — submit, apologize, hand them back — are the language of a formal surrender between equals, and they are refused.
