太子叱愚 妖猶輕敵 The Prince Rebukes His Folly; the Fiend Still Scorns the Foe

The prince bellowed, 'You wretch, you are utterly benighted!'

'Do you know who this monk is?'

yāoguàidào:「shìtángcháoláidesēngrénwǎng西tiānjīngdeshàng。」 yāoguàidào:「shìtángcháoláidesēngrénwǎng西tiānjīngdeshàng。」

The fiend said, 'He is a monk come from the Tang court, a priest bound west to fetch the scriptures.'

The prince said, 'You know only that he is the Tang Monk — you do not know how formidable his disciples are.'

yāoguàidào:「yǒuchángzuǐdeshànghuànzuòzhūjièzhuōzhùleyàotángshàngtóngzhēngchī yāoguàidào:「yǒuchángzuǐdeshànghuànzuòzhūjièzhuōzhùleyàotángshàngtóngzhēngchī

The fiend said, 'He has a long-snouted monk called Zhu Eight Rules, whom I have also caught, meaning to steam and eat him together with the Tang priest.'

háiyǒuhuànzuòshāshàngnǎishìtiáohēihànzihuìliǎn使shǐgēnbǎozhàngzuózàizhèménwàitǎoshībèishuàichūbīngdùngāngbiānzhàndebàizhèntáoshēngjiànzěndehài。」 háiyǒuhuànzuòshāshàngnǎishìtiáohēihànzihuìliǎn使shǐgēnbǎozhàngzuózàizhèménwàitǎoshībèishuàichūbīngdùngāngbiānzhàndebàizhèntáoshēngjiànzěndehài。」

'There is one more disciple, called Sha the Monk — a swarthy fellow with an ill-omened face, who wields a treasure-staff. Yesterday he came to this gate demanding his master, and I led out my river-troops, gave him a volley of the steel whip, and fought him until he was routed and fled for his life — he seemed nothing so very formidable.'


總評 Commentary

The prince rebukes the alligator-dragon's ignorance and warns him of the disciples, but the fiend, having routed Sha Monk once, dismisses the danger — boasting of Pigsy caught and Sha Monk beaten. His fatal underestimation, of the unmentioned Pilgrim above all, seals the coming defeat.
