Now Sha Monk had sat long in the wood, watching for Pilgrim, who did not come. He slung the baggage over the horse, in one hand gripping the demon-quelling staff and in the other holding the bridle, and came out of the pines to look southward — and there he saw Pilgrim approaching in high delight.

Sha Monk went to meet him, saying, 'Elder brother, you went to invite the Bodhisattva — why are you only now returned?'

'You are still dreaming,' said Pilgrim. 'Old Monkey has already invited the Bodhisattva and subdued the monster.'

Then Pilgrim recounted the Bodhisattva's mighty power in full.

shāsēngshífēnhuāndào:「jiùshī。」 shāsēngshífēnhuāndào:「jiùshī。」

Sha Monk was overjoyed and said, 'Let us go and rescue our master!'


總評 Commentary

A brief interlude returns to Sha Monk, the pilgrimage's steady 'water' temperament, and the formulae 且不題 / 卻說 mark the scene-cut in the storyteller's manner. His weapon is here named the 降妖寶杖, the demon-quelling staff.
