Wukong's reply is characteristically unsentimental. 你那時節魔孽迷心，今朝得成正果 — in those days you were bewitched, today you are enlightened — is generous in form, but the sting is in the tail: 才知老孫是好人也, only now do you see that old Sun is a good man. He is settling an old score under cover of congratulation, which is exactly how he settled with Bajie in the opening blocks. The scene is a brief interlude before the chapter's centre, and it works to raise the register — from the demon's mud-walled mansion to the ordered court of the Southern Sea — just before Guanyin appears in a guise that overturns all its ceremony.
