Dividing the Loads to Enter the City
行者問：「八戒，你行李有多重？」八戒道：「哥哥，這行李日逐挑著，倒也不知有多重。」行者道：「你把那一擔兒分為兩擔：將一擔兒你挑著，將一擔兒與這皇帝挑。我們趕早進城幹事。」八戒歡喜道：「造化，造化。當時馱他來，不知費了多少力；如今醫活了，原來是個替身。」那獃子就弄玄虛，將行李分開，就問寺中取條匾擔，輕些的自己挑了，重些的教那皇帝挑著。行者笑道：「陛下，著你那般打扮，挑著擔子，跟我們走走，可虧你麼？」那國王慌忙跪下道：「師父，你是我重生父母一般，莫說挑擔，情願執鞭墜鐙，伏侍老爺，同行上西天去也。」行者道：「不要你去西天，我內中有個緣故。你只挑得四十里進城，待捉了妖精，你還做你的皇帝，我們還取我們的經也。」八戒聽言道：「這等說，他只挑四十里路，我老豬還是長工。」行者道：「兄弟，不要胡說，趁早外邊引路。」行者问：「八戒，你行李有多重？」八戒道：「哥哥，这行李日逐挑着，倒也不知有多重。」行者道：「你把那一担儿分为两担：将一担儿你挑着，将一担儿与这皇帝挑。我们赶早进城干事。」八戒欢喜道：「造化，造化。当时驮他来，不知费了多少力；如今医活了，原来是个替身。」那呆子就弄玄虚，将行李分开，就问寺中取条匾担，轻些的自己挑了，重些的教那皇帝挑着。行者笑道：「陛下，着你那般打扮，挑着担子，跟我们走走，可亏你么？」那国王慌忙跪下道：「师父，你是我重生父母一般，莫说挑担，情愿执鞭坠镫，伏侍老爷，同行上西天去也。」行者道：「不要你去西天，我内中有个缘故。你只挑得四十里进城，待捉了妖精，你还做你的皇帝，我们还取我们的经也。」八戒听言道：「这等说，他只挑四十里路，我老猪还是长工。」行者道：「兄弟，不要胡说，趁早外边引路。」

行李: 行 = xíng. 多重: 重 = zhòng ("how heavy").

Eight Rules said: "Brother, this baggage I shoulder day after day — I really don't know how heavy it is."
挑著: durative 著 = zhe. 倒也不知: 倒 = dào ("yet, actually"). 多重: 重 = zhòng.
行者道：「你把那一擔兒分為兩擔：將一擔兒你挑著，將一擔兒與這皇帝挑。

Pilgrim said: "Divide that one load of yours into two: one load you carry, and one load give this emperor to carry.
Deictic 那 = nà. 擔 ("a load," the measure) = dàn throughout; because 擔 is fixed to the 4th tone, each preceding 一 reverts to yí (sandhi overrides). Suffix 兒 = er; coverb 將 = jiāng; 分為 為 = wéi; durative 著 = zhe.
我們趕早進城幹事。」

趕早進城幹事: 幹 = gàn, "to attend to business."

Eight Rules said gleefully: "What luck, what luck!
造化 = "good fortune." Bajie delighted to be rid of half the load.
當時馱他來，不知費了多少力；

When we carried him here on our backs, no telling what it cost in effort;
當時馱他來: 當 = dāng ("at that time"); 馱 = tuó. 費了多少力 = "how much strength it cost."
如今醫活了，原來是個替身。」

now that he's cured, it turns out he's a stand-in!"
醫活了 = "cured back to life." 替身 = "a substitute, a stand-in" — Bajie's cheerful view of the revived king.
那獃子就弄玄虛，將行李分開，就問寺中取條匾擔，輕些的自己挑了，重些的教那皇帝挑著。

That blockhead played his tricks: he split the baggage apart, then asked the monastery for a flat pole, shouldered the lighter load himself, and had the emperor carry the heavier.
Deictic 那 (那獃子, 那皇帝) = nà; suffix 子 = zi. Coverb 將 = jiāng; 寺中 中 = zhōng; 匾擔 擔 = dàn; 重些 重 = zhòng; causative 教 = jiào; durative 著 = zhe.
行者笑道：「陛下，著你那般打扮，挑著擔子，跟我們走走，可虧你麼？」
行者笑道：「陛下，着你那般打扮，挑着担子，跟我们走走，可亏你么？」
Pilgrim laughed: "Your Majesty, dressed up like that, shouldering a load, keeping pace with us — does it wrong you?"
著你那般打扮: causative 著 = zhuó ("to have you—"); durative 挑著 著 = zhe. Deictic 那般 = nà; 擔子 擔 = dàn.
那國王慌忙跪下道：「師父，你是我重生父母一般，莫說挑擔，情願執鞭墜鐙，伏侍老爺，同行上西天去也。」

That king hastily knelt: "Master, you are to me as parents who gave me second birth — never mind shouldering a load, I would gladly ply the whip and hold the stirrup, and serve you all the way to the Western Heaven."
Deictic 那國王: 那 = nà. 重生父母: 重 = chóng ("reborn"). 挑擔 擔 = dàn. 同行: 行 = xíng ("to travel together," not háng).
行者道：「不要你去西天，我內中有個緣故。

內中: 中 = zhōng ("within"). 緣故 = "a reason."

挑得四十里: complement 得 = de; 里 = lǐ (the li, a unit of distance, left untranslated). Both 還 = hái ("still, then").
八戒聽言道：「這等說，他只挑四十里路，我老豬還是長工。」

Eight Rules said on hearing this: "By that reckoning, he only carries forty li of road, and old Hog is still the long-term hand!"
還是: 還 = hái. 長工: 長 = cháng ("a long-term hired hand").
行者道：「兄弟，不要胡說，趁早外邊引路。」
行者道：「兄弟，不要胡说，趁早外边引路。」
Pilgrim said: "Brother, no nonsense — get out front quickly and lead the way."
胡說 = "talking rot." 趁早外邊引路 = "lead on out front, and be quick."
總評 Commentary
The chapter drops back into comedy for a beat before the court confrontation. The load-splitting is pure Eight Rules: no sooner is the king revived than Bajie's chief thought is to offload half his baggage onto him — and, given leave, he cheerfully hands the heavier share to the freshly-resurrected monarch and keeps the lighter for himself. Wukong's needling question, whether it "wrongs" His Majesty to trudge along disguised and burdened, and the king's reply — that Wukong is a parent who gave him "second birth," and he would gladly ply whip and stirrup all the way west — set the humility of the restored king against the self-interest of the pig.
Beneath the joke the plot is being set. Wukong keeps the king in servant's disguise and limits his part to the forty li into the city, because the confrontation he is planning depends on the true king appearing at exactly the right moment, unrecognized until then. Bajie's grumble that he is still the household's "long-term hand" (長工) lands the scene on a laugh, but the arrangement it complains of is the quiet machinery by which the impostor will be exposed.
