Breathing Life Back into the King

Commentary
This is the chapter's hinge — the actual resurrection, worked not by underworld bureaucracy but by the elixir and by breath. The narration is careful to make it a two-stage process: the golden pellet, washed down the dead throat, sets the bowels sounding and the blood stirring, but cannot of itself restore the severed 元氣, the primal breath; that requires a living man to breathe into the corpse. The theology is exact, and the novel underlines it — Tripitaka forbids Bajie the office and reserves it for Wukong, because Bajie's lifetime of killing and meat-eating has left him "a single breath of turbid air," while Wukong, pine-gnawing ascetic, carries "a single breath of clear air." Purity of body is made the precondition of the power to revive.
The breath itself is routed through the stations of the inner-alchemical body — the 重樓 (the "double-storey," the windpipe), the 明堂 (Bright Hall), the 丹田 (Cinnabar Field), the 湧泉 (Bubbling Spring in the sole), and the 泥垣宮 (the Mud-Wall Palace in the head) — the map of Daoist 內丹 practice laid over a moment of plot. What in a lesser book would be a simple raising of the dead is here staged as a circulation of 氣 along the very meridians the pilgrimage is meant to purify, so that the king's return to life doubles as a demonstration of the cultivation the whole journey allegorizes. The revived king's first words — a ghost last night, a living man at dawn — give the chapter-title its second line: "the three-years-dead former lord is born again in the world."
