總評 Commentary

This passage is pure comic interlude, and one of the small set-pieces in which Wú Chéng'ēn (吳承恩) lets his pilgrims simply be themselves. The plot barely advances — Wukong is only arranging matters before he leaves — yet the scene is essential to the book's tonal balance: between the coercion that opens the chapter and the solemn ascent to Heaven that follows, it sets a stretch of low farce, with Eight Rules coached in the fine grades of funeral wailing.

The humour turns on a mock-technical taxonomy. Wukong distinguishes (dry, tearless bawling) from (snivelling with a few squeezed tears) from true 嚎啕痛哭 (wailing with both real tears and real heart) — the classifying instinct of a trickster who treats grief as a craft to be graded. Eight Rules' answer is to counterfeit the article outright, twisting a paper spill up his nose to force the sneezes and tears, then "reckoning the yellow and cursing the black" (數黃道黑) in a stream of invented lament so convincing that the tender-hearted Tripitaka is moved to weep in earnest. The joke — pilgrim faking sorrow so well that the holy man cries — is characteristic of the novel's affectionate irony toward its own cast.
