逐句解 Line by line
The Rākṣasī came out of the door and cried aloud, 'Where is Sun Wukong?'
She does not ask who he is or what he wants. The name is the whole of her interest, and she brings it out of the door with her.
Pilgrim stepped forward, bowed from the waist and said, 'Sister-in-law, old Sun presents his respects.'
嫂嫂 'elder brother's wife' claims the sworn-brotherhood outright, and 奉揖 is a formal salutation. Pilgrim opens by asserting kinship to a woman who has come out with two swords, which is the woodcutter's advice carried further than the woodcutter intended.
The Rākṣasī snapped at him: 'Who is your sister-in-law? Who wants your respects?'
咄 duō is a bark of contempt. 那個 is interrogative nǎ — 'which one, who' — against the deictic 那 of 那羅剎 in the same passage. Her two questions reject the kinship and the courtesy separately.
Three short exchanges, and the terms of the whole confrontation are set. She shouts for a name; he offers a relationship; she refuses both the relationship and the courtesy that came with it, in two questions that take nineteen graphs together.
Pilgrim's move is bold to the point of recklessness. He has been told by a woodcutter to read the face and judge the manner, and what he does on first sight of a woman with two swords is claim to be family. It is not tact; it is the opening of a negotiation, and it puts on the table the only asset he has.
Her reply is the correct one and it is also a refusal to negotiate. 誰是你的嫂嫂 denies the kinship; 那個要你奉揖 denies that his courtesy is wanted. She has declined the frame before he can argue inside it.
