That Local Spirit bowed low with his back curved, and said with a slight smile:

控背躬身 'drawing in the back and bending the body', a deep obeisance; is bèi. The tag stands as its own unit at the close of a long prose line, so the tag alone opens the chapter's eighth and last showcase — a single couplet.

'If you would borrow the true banana fan, then you must go and seek out the King of Great Strength.'

is the adverb hái. 大力王 is the Bull Demon King under his style 大力牛魔王, named in a subordinate clause by the woodcutter at blk7 and now made the object of the next quest. The chapter's shortest showcase, and its whole function is to hand the reader over to Ch.60.

總評 Commentary

The chapter's eighth and last showcase is a single couplet, fourteen graphs, and it is the smallest in Ch.59 by a wide margin — set against the ten-couplet rhapsody at the cave mouth and the ten-couplet battle poem. Its whole function is structural: to deliver one name with the weight that verse confers.

若還要借真蕉扇須是尋求大力王. If you would borrow the true banana fan, you must seek out the King of Great Strength. The Bull Demon King has been in this chapter since blk7, where a woodcutter mentioned in a subordinate clause that the Rākṣasī was his wife. He has never appeared. He is now the object of the quest.

The Local Spirit delivers it 控背躬身微微笑道 — bowing low with his back curved, smiling slightly. The smile is the same one he wore when he identified the forgery, and it belongs to a minor functionary who has known the answer all along and has been waiting to be asked the right question.
