好殺 The Second Clash

好hǎo殺shā：好hǎo杀shā：

The verse-tag 好殺 (‘a fierce fight’) opening the second combat 賦; it gets its own non-verse segment, the prose lead having closed the previous passage.

怒nù發fā潑pō妖yāo魔mó，惱nǎo急jí猴hóu王wáng將jiàng。怒nù发fā泼pō妖yāo魔mó，恼nǎo急jí猴hóu王wáng将jiàng。

The wicked demon raging in wrath; the Monkey-King champion goaded to fury.

怒發潑妖魔 / 惱急猴王將: 將 read jiàng (‘champion, warrior’, the nominal general-reading, paralleling 妖魔 and fitting the 賦's 去聲 -àng rhyme), not the jiāng coverb. Opens the antithesis of demon and ape.

This one bent wholly on saving the scripture-seeking monk; that one bent on devouring Tang Tripitaka.

這一個…那一個: 那 nà (deictic); 一 before 個 t4 → yí ×2. 專救 ‘bent wholly on saving’; 唐三藏 zàng (Tripitaka). The stakes stated as pure opposition.

心xīn變biàn沒méi親qīn情qíng，情qíng疏shū無wú義yì讓ràng。心xīn变biàn没méi亲qīn情qíng，情qíng疏shū无wú义yì让ràng。

Hearts turned, with no tie of kin; feelings estranged, with no courtesy of yielding.

心變沒親情 ‘hearts changed, no kinship’: 沒 méi. 情疏無義讓 ‘feelings estranged, no yielding’. The kinship-claim of the earlier scenes is wholly abandoned.

This one longed to seize the other and flay him alive; that one longed to take him and dip him raw in sauce.

這個…那個: 那 nà (deictic). 恨不得 ×2 ‘longed to, could not wait to’: 得 de (the idiom 恨不得, neutral tone). 活剝皮 ‘flay alive’: 剝 bō. 生蘸醬 ‘dip raw in sauce’: 蘸 zhàn. The grotesque mutual appetite (不 before base 得 t2 → bù).

真zhēn個gè忒tè英yīng雄xióng，果guǒ然rán多duō猛měng壯zhuàng。真zhēn个gè忒tè英yīng雄xióng，果guǒ然rán多duō猛měng壮zhuàng。

Truly they were valiant beyond measure, fierce and stalwart indeed.

真個忒英雄 ‘truly valiant (忒 ‘exceedingly’)’; 多猛壯 ‘most fierce and stout’. A couplet of praise for both combatants.

Cudgel came and spear parried, staking win or loss; spear went and cudgel met it, striving high and low.

棒來槍架 / 槍去棒迎 — a chiastic weapon-couplet (cudgel↔spear). 賭輸贏 ‘staking victory or defeat’; 爭下上 ‘striving low and high’. No NT graphs.

They raised their hands and brandished twenty rounds, the two of them matched in skill.

舉手相掄 ‘raised hands and brandished at each other’: 相 xiāng (mutual), not the xiàng default. 二十回 ‘twenty rounds’; 一般樣 ‘the same’ (一 before 般 t1 → yì). The 賦 ends on the deadlock — which the rain, not the cudgel, must break.

總評 Commentary

The second combat 賦 mirrors the first but sharpens it: the kinship-claim is gone (心變沒親情), and the two are locked in pure enmity, each imagining the other flayed or dipped in sauce. The grotesque-comic register (活剝皮, 生蘸醬) is characteristic of the novel's battle-verse. The rhapsody ends, as the fight itself does, in deadlock — twenty rounds, evenly matched — which is precisely why Wukong has staged the dragons overhead: the cudgel cannot decide this, and the demon's fire is about to.
