呼龍降雨 Calling Down the Rain

逐句解 Line by line

The demon king, having fought the Pilgrim a full twenty bouts and seeing he could not prevail, made a feint with his spear, swiftly drew back, clenched his fist, and again struck his nose two blows; then out spurted the fire, the smoke-flame burst from the carts before the gate, and red flames went leaping from his mouth and eyes.

那妖王…那門前 nà ×2 (deictic). 見得不能取勝 ‘saw he could not win’: 得 de (complement); 不 before 能 t2 → bù. 捏著拳頭 ‘clenched a fist’: 著 zhe. 又將鼻子搥了 ‘took his nose and struck’: 將 jiāng (disposal); 搥 chuí; 子 suffix; 了 le. 口眼中中 zhōng. 虛幌一槍 (一 before 槍 t1 → yì). The demon raises the fire a second time.

回頭叫道 ‘turned and called’: 叫 jiào. 龍王何在 ‘where are the Dragon Kings?’ — the cue Wukong arranged. No NT graphs.

那nà龍lóng王wáng兄xiōng弟dì帥shuài眾zhòng水shuǐ族zú，望wàng妖yāo精jīng火huǒ光guāng裡lǐ噴pēn下xià雨yǔ來lái。那nà龙lóng王wáng兄xiōng弟dì帅shuài众zhòng水shuǐ族zú，望wàng妖yāo精jīng火huǒ光guāng里lǐ喷pēn下xià雨yǔ来lái。

The Dragon King and his brothers, leading the whole water-host, spouted rain down into the demon's blaze.

那龍王兄弟 nà (deictic). 帥眾水族 ‘led the water-host’: 帥 shuài (lead). 望妖精火光裡噴下雨來 ‘spouted rain into the demon's fire-light’. The dragons answer the cue at once.

總評 Commentary

The demon raises the samādhi fire a second time, by the same grotesque ritual of the self-struck nose; and at Wukong's arranged cue — ‘Where are the Dragon Kings?’ — the four sea-sovereigns loose their whole water-host into the blaze. The trap is sprung exactly as planned. What follows will test whether the plan's premise — that water conquers fire — holds against a fire that is not, in the ordinary sense, fire at all.
