八戒道：「有甚話吩咐，等我去請。」行者笑道：「也罷，你是去得。若見了菩薩，切休仰視，只可低頭禮拜。等他問時，你卻將地名、妖名說與他，再請救師父之事。他若肯來，定取擒了怪物。」八戒聞言，即便駕了雲霧，向南而去。八戒道：「有甚话吩咐，等我去请。」行者笑道：「也罢，你是去得。若见了菩萨，切休仰视，只可低头礼拜。等他问时，你却将地名、妖名说与他，再请救师父之事。他若肯来，定取擒了怪物。」八戒闻言，即便驾了云雾，向南而去。
逐句解 Line by line
Eight Rules said: ‘What instructions have you? Let me go and ask her.’
有甚話吩咐 ‘what instructions?’: 甚 shén (interrogative, per 有甚 = shén). 等我去請 ‘let me go ask’. Bajie volunteers for the errand.
The Pilgrim laughed: ‘Well enough — you can go.
行者 xíng. 也罷 ‘well then, all right’: 罷 ba (the sentence-final hortative, not the bà of dismay). 你是去得 ‘you can go’: 得 de (potential, 去得). Wukong assents.
If you see the Bodhisattva, on no account look up; only bow your head in reverence.
若見了菩薩 le. 切休仰視 ‘on no account look up’; 只可低頭禮拜 ‘only bow the head in worship’. Wukong's careful protocol for approaching Guanyin.
When she asks, then tell her the place-name and the demon's name, and beg her to rescue the master.
等他問時 ‘when she asks’. 你卻將地名、妖名說與他 ‘tell her the place-name and demon-name’: 將 jiāng (disposal). 再請救師父 ‘then beg rescue of the master’. Precise instructions for the petition.
If she is willing to come, she will surely take the monster.’
他若肯來 ‘if she will come’. 定取擒了怪物 ‘will surely seize the monster’: 了 le. Wukong's confidence in Guanyin — the chapter's turn toward its resolution.
Eight Rules, hearing this, at once mounted the mist and clouds and went off toward the south.
即便駕了雲霧 ‘at once mounted the clouds’: 了 le. 向南而去 ‘went off to the south’ — toward Guanyin's Potalaka. Bajie's departure, which the demon is about to intercept.
Wukong dispatches Bajie with careful instructions — don't look up, bow low, give the place-name and demon-name, beg the rescue — and sends him south toward Guanyin's island of Potalaka. The scene closes the pilgrims' strategy: with Wukong too injured to go and only Guanyin able to help, everything now depends on Bajie reaching her. It is exactly this dependence that the demon, watching from his cave, is about to turn into a trap.
