In the end we do not know in what direction the Great Sage turned; and for that you must listen to the explanation that follows.
⚠ The 世德堂本 prints 且聽下分解 — the 回 that the formula normally carries is MISSING. This is what 維基文庫’s text of the 世德堂本 gives, and it is encoded as printed rather than silently normalised to 且聽下回分解. The chapter is thus anomalous at both ends: it opens on 詩曰 rather than 話說 or 卻說, and closes on a truncated formula. 分解 gives 分 as fēn and 解 as jiě.
The chapter ends without resolving anything. Wukong is gone, the pilgrims are three, the Yang household has lost its only son without ever learning how, and the road west is still to be walked. 投向何方 — in what direction did he turn — is a real question, and the answer, in chapter fifty-seven, is that he goes to Guanyin, and that something else wearing his face goes to Tripitaka.
The formula itself is defective, and the defect is the 世德堂本’s own: 且聽下分解 without the 回. It is a small thing and probably a compositor’s slip, but it leaves the chapter unclosed in exactly the way its story is unclosed, and the edition-faithful principle requires that it stand as printed with the variant noted rather than quietly repaired.
