收留悟空 Take Him Back Again
Line by line
The Bodhisattva said: "Tang Monk, the one who struck you the other day was the false Pilgrim, a Six-Eared Macaque.
The verdict is delivered to Tripitaka in nineteen graphs, without preamble — the plain fact he has been unable to establish for himself.
By the Tathāgata's good knowledge of him, he has already been struck dead by Wukong.
幸如來知識 'fortunately the Tathāgata knew him' — 知識 here in its literal sense of knowing and recognising, not the modern noun 'knowledge'.
You must now take Wukong back in. The demon-barriers along the road are not yet done with; you will have to have him guard you, and only so will you get to the Numinous Mountain, see the Buddha and fetch the scriptures. Give over your resentment."
必得 děi — the colloquial modal 'must, have to', a THIRD reading beside the dé of 才得到 four graphs later. 再休嗔怪 (4 Han) is joined backwards here (§6 J3).
Tripitaka knocked his head and said: "I shall respectfully obey the instruction."
教旨 jiào, an instruction from a superior. Nine graphs, and it is the whole of Tripitaka's response to a chapter that began with his expelling Wukong.
Guanyin does not ask; she instructs. 你今須是收留悟空 — you must now take Wukong back in — and the reason she gives is purely practical: the road ahead has demons on it and you will not survive without him. 必得他保護你,才得到靈山 makes the argument from necessity, not from justice.
That is a deliberate choice on the novel's part. Nobody tells Tripitaka he was wrong. Nobody makes him apologise. The reconciliation is arranged over his head by a Bodhisattva acting on the Buddha's word, and his part in it is four graphs of compliance: 謹遵教旨.
再休嗔怪 — give over your resentment — is the closest the chapter comes to addressing the original quarrel, and it is addressed to the master rather than the disciple. The expulsion that set five thousand graphs in motion is closed by an instruction not to be annoyed.
