Sha Monk Reports Back

Now it is told that Sha Monk, having taken his leave of the two of them at the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, travelled another three days and nights, returned to the farmstead, and set out the whole prior matter to the Tang Monk, one time through.
卻說 'now it is told', the storyteller's formula for switching threads. 說了一遍 uses the same 一遍 that has governed every recital in the chapter.
The Tang Monk, repenting to himself, said: "At the time I said only that it was Sun Wukong who struck me with his cudgel and carried off the bundle. How was I to know it was in fact a fiend falsely changed into the Pilgrim?"
當時 dāng, at that time. 豈知 'how was I to know' — the formula of belated recognition, and the closest the master comes to an apology.
總評 Commentary
The scene shifts, and with it the register: from the Hall of Divine Mists to a farmhouse, from memorials to a man admitting he was wrong. Tripitaka's 自家悔恨 is the first movement of sympathy the chapter has permitted toward Wukong, and it arrives while Wukong is elsewhere and cannot hear it.
The remorse is also narrower than it looks. What Tripitaka regrets is a factual error — he thought the blow came from Wukong and it did not. He does not revisit the expulsion that preceded the blow, which was his own act and the cause of everything since. 豈知 concedes ignorance rather than fault.
