星官醫治 The Star Officer Heals Them
Line by line
Hearing this, the Great Sage went out with him at once by the Eastern Gate of Heaven and made straight for the Kingdom of Western Liang. Seeing Poison-Foe Mountain not far off, Pilgrim pointed and said, “That is the mountain.”
望見 is to catch sight of at a distance. No NT or polyphonic direct-verify graph falls in this segment.
The Star Officer brought his cloud down, and together with Pilgrim came to the foot of the slope before the stone screen.
⚠ 同行者 is 同 plus 行者 — together WITH the Pilgrim — and is not the word 同行. pypinyin's phrase dictionary reads it as tóngháng and bakes 行 as háng, which would be wrong; the reading is xíng and is specified by hand. This is one of the two 行 traps located at the chapter kickoff.
Sha Monk saw them and said, “Second brother, get up! Eldest brother has managed to fetch the Star Officer.”
請得 takes the attainment dé. Both 了 are aspectual and take positional specs.
The idiot, still with a hand over his mouth, said, “Pardon me, pardon me. I have a sickness upon me and cannot make my bow.”
侮著 is durative zhe, 侮 again standing for 摀. 行禮 takes 行 as xíng, to perform a rite. The 不 stays bù before the second tone of 能.
The Star Officer said, “You are a man in religious practice. What sickness should you have?”
修行 takes 行 as xíng. 何病之有 is the literary inversion, the object fronted before 有. No guarded graph falls in this segment.
Bajie said, “This morning I fought with that fiend, and she jabbed me once upon the lip with it, and it aches to this hour.”
早間 takes 間 as jiān. 著我唇上 uses 著 in the contact sense, zhuó, exactly as Pilgrim's own account of his wound did — the two clauses are built the same way.
The Star Officer said, “Come up here, and let me physic it for you.”
醫治醫治 is a verbal reduplication of casual aspect. No guarded graph falls in this segment.
Only then did the idiot take his hand away; and mumbling and whimpering he said, “By all means physic it — and when it is better I shall thank you.”
哼哼唧唧 is a mimetic reduplication and keeps its default reading. 待好了謝你 makes the gratitude conditional on the cure, which is the joke.
Bajie's excuse for not bowing is that he has a sickness upon him, and the Star Officer's reply is the driest line in the chapter: 你是個修行之人,何病之有 — you are a man in religious practice; what sickness should you have? It is a theological objection raised as small talk. The novel does not have Bajie answer it; he simply describes what happened to his lip, which is its own kind of answer.
The cure, when it comes, has no apparatus whatever. The officer passes his hand once across the place and blows a breath on it, and the pain is gone. No spell is spoken, no medicine given, nothing is fetched from heaven. After four thousand graphs in which a rod, a rake, a Bodhisattva and the whole celestial bureaucracy have failed to make any impression on this poison, it is undone by a touch — because the creature who touches it is the natural enemy of scorpions and was always going to be.
Bajie's gratitude is characteristically hedged. 待好了謝你 — when it is better, I shall thank you — which reserves the thanks until the treatment has been shown to work. He has just been mumbling and whimpering with his hand over his mouth, and he still finds room for a condition.
