Asking the Kingdom's Name
行者道：「我貧道一則年幼，二則是遠方乍來，實是不知。煩二位道長將這裡地名，君王好道愛賢之事，細說一遍，足見同道之情。」道士說：「此城名喚車遲國。寶殿上君王與我們有親。」行者聞言，呵呵笑道：「想是道士做了皇帝？」他道：「不是。行者道：「我贫道一则年幼，二则是远方乍来，实是不知。烦二位道长将这里地名，君王好道爱贤之事，细说一遍，足见同道之情。」道士说：「此城名唤车迟国。宝殿上君王与我们有亲。」行者闻言，呵呵笑道：「想是道士做了皇帝？」他道：「不是。

行者道：「我貧道一則年幼，二則是遠方乍來，實是不知。

Pilgrim said: “This poor Daoist is, for one, young in years, and for another, newly come from a far country — truly I do not know.
一則 (…二則): the enumerative 一 = yī, “for one … for two.” 乍來, newly arrived.
煩二位道長將這裡地名，君王好道愛賢之事，細說一遍，足見同道之情。」

May I trouble you two masters to set out in full this place’s name, and the matter of the king’s love of the Dao and cherishing of the worthy? It would show the fellowship of those who share the Way.”
道長: 長 = zhǎng. 將…細說: disposal 將 = jiāng, “take (these matters) and set them forth.” 好道: 好 = hào. 一遍: 一 = yí before biàn.
道士說：「此城名喚車遲國。
道士说：「此城名唤车迟国。
The Daoist said: “This city is called the Cart-Slow Kingdom.
車遲國 (Chēchí Guó), the “Cart-Slow Kingdom.”
寶殿上君王與我們有親。」
宝殿上君王与我们有亲。」
The sovereign upon the treasure-hall is kin to us.”
有親, “to be related, be kin.”
行者聞言，呵呵笑道：「想是道士做了皇帝？」
行者闻言，呵呵笑道：「想是道士做了皇帝？」
Pilgrim, hearing this, laughed aloud: “Has a Daoist become emperor, then?”
呵呵笑, to laugh out loud. 做了皇帝: aspectual 了 = le.
他道：「不是。
他道：「不是。
He said: “No.
不是: 不 = bú before shì.
總評 Commentary
Wukong, still in his beggar’s guise, plays the ignorant newcomer to draw out the exposition, and the Daoist obliges with the two facts that frame the arc: the kingdom is 車遲國, “Cart-Slow,” and its ruler is “kin” to the Daoists. His mock question — “Has a Daoist become emperor?” — is comic on the surface but points at the real scandal the chapter exposes: a court so captured by the three immortals that the line between throne and abbey has all but dissolved.
