That Great Sage went straight into the killing-ground, was seized by the executioner, bound into a bundle, and pressed down on a high earthen mound; and no sooner had the shout gone up — "Strike!" —

徑至殺場: 場 = chǎng (the killing-ground). 劊子手: suffixal 子 = zi. Two 那 (那大聖, 那土墩) both nà (deictic). 高處: 處 = chù.

颼sōu的de把bǎ個gè頭tóu砍kǎn將jiāng下xià來lái。飕sōu的de把bǎ个gè头tóu砍kǎn将jiāng下xià来lái。

The executioner gave it a kick besides, and it rolled off like a tumbling watermelon, some thirty or forty paces away.

劊子手: suffixal 子 = zi. 好似滾西瓜: 似 = sì ("like a rolling melon").

行xíng者zhě腔qiāng子zi中zhōng更gèng不bù出chū血xiě。行xíng者zhě腔qiāng子zi中zhōng更gèng不bù出chū血xiě。

From the Pilgrim's neck-cavity not a drop of blood came out.

腔子中: 子 = zi, 中 = zhōng. 更不出血: 更 = gèng ("not even").

只zhǐ聽tīng得dé肚dù裡lǐ叫jiào聲shēng：「頭tóu來lái！」只zhǐ听tīng得dé肚dù里lǐ叫jiào声shēng：「头tóu来lái！」

Only a cry was heard from within his belly: "Head, come back!"

只聽得: 得 = dé ("one heard"). 肚裡叫聲 = "a cry from within the belly."

In a fluster the Deer-Power Immortal, seeing him have such a device, at once recited a spell and charged the local Earth-god and spirits: "Hold that head fast — wait till I've beaten this monk and reported to the king, and I'll have your little shrine rebuilt into a great temple, your clay image remade in true gold."

慌得: 得 = de. 教本坊土地、神祗: causative 教 = jiào. 將人頭扯住: disposal 將 = jiāng. 正金身 = "a true golden body."

Now those Earth-god and spirits, because he commanded the Five-Thunder rite, were subject to his summons too, and in secret truly held down the Pilgrim's head.

那些土地: 那 = nà. 五雷法 = "the Five-Thunder rite." 暗中: 中 = zhōng ("in secret").

行xíng者zhě又yòu叫jiào聲shēng：「頭tóu來lái！」行xíng者zhě又yòu叫jiào声shēng：「头tóu来lái！」

The Pilgrim called out again: "Head, come back!"

又叫聲 = "cried out once more."

那nà頭tóu一yí似sì生shēng根gēn，莫mò想xiǎng得de動dòng。那nà头tóu一yí似sì生shēng根gēn，莫mò想xiǎng得de动dòng。

But the head, as though it had struck root, was not to be budged.

那頭一似生根: 那 = nà, 似 = sì ("as if rooted"). 莫想得動: 得 = de ("not to be moved").

行xíng者zhě心xīn焦jiāo，捻niǎn著zhe拳quán，掙zhēng了le一yì掙zhēng，將jiāng綑kǔn的de繩shéng子zi就jiù皆jiē掙zhēng斷duàn，喝hè聲shēng：「長zhǎng！」行xíng者zhě心xīn焦jiāo，捻niǎn着zhe拳quán，挣zhēng了le一yì挣zhēng，将jiāng捆kǔn的de绳shéng子zi就jiù皆jiē挣zhēng断duàn，喝hè声shēng：「长zhǎng！」

The Pilgrim, growing anxious, clenched his fist, gave a wrench and another, snapped clean through the binding ropes, and shouted: "Grow!"

捻著拳: durative 著 = zhe. 將綑的繩子: disposal 將 = jiāng, 子 = zi. 喝聲: 喝 = hè ("to shout"). 長 here = zhǎng ("Grow!").

颼sōu的de腔qiāng子zi內nèi長zhǎng出chū一yí個gè頭tóu來lái。飕sōu的de腔qiāng子zi内nèi长zhǎng出chū一yí个gè头tóu来lái。

With a whoosh a head grew out of his neck-cavity.

So frightened were they that every executioner's heart quailed and every man of the Plumed-Forest Guard trembled in his gall.

諕得: 諕 = xià (= 嚇). 那劊子手: 那 = nà, 子 = zi.

The supervising officer hurried into court and reported: "Your Majesty, that little monk has had his head cut off and grown another."

那監斬官急走入朝: 那 = nà, 朝 = cháo ("the court"). 那小和尚: 那 = nà. 又長出一顆來了: 長 = zhǎng.

八bā戒jiè冷lěng笑xiào道dào：「沙shā僧sēng，那nǎ知zhī哥gē哥gē還hái有yǒu這zhè般bān手shǒu段duàn。」八bā戒jiè冷lěng笑xiào道dào：「沙shā僧sēng，那nǎ知zhī哥gē哥gē还hái有yǒu这zhè般bān手shǒu段duàn。」

Eight Rules laughed coldly and said: "Sha Monk — who'd have known Brother had this trick besides!"

那知: rhetorical 那 = nǎ ("who would have known"). 還有這般手段: 還 = hái ("besides").

沙shā僧sēng道dào：「他tā有yǒu七qī十shí二èr般bān變biàn化huà，就jiù有yǒu七qī十shí二èr個gè頭tóu哩li。」沙shā僧sēng道dào：「他tā有yǒu七qī十shí二èr般bān变biàn化huà，就jiù有yǒu七qī十shí二èr个gè头tóu哩li。」

Sha the Monk said: "He has seventy-two transformations — so he has seventy-two heads."

七十二般變化 = "seventy-two transformations." 就有七十二個頭哩: 哩 = li (the particle).

總評 Commentary

The first ordeal delivers on the boast. Wukong's severed head rolls off "like a tumbling watermelon," his neck sheds no blood, and he calls the head back at will — until Deer-Power, quick to cheat, binds the Earth-god by his Five-Thunder rite to hold the head down and bribe the local spirits with a rebuilt temple. The struggle that follows, Wukong "anxious" and unable to draw his head back, is a rare moment of real jeopardy inside the display of power, and its resolution is pure Great Sage: he simply grows a new head, snapping the ropes and shouting "Grow!"

The detail of the corrupted local gods sharpens the chapter's satire of the Cart-Slow theocracy: even the humble Earth-god is in the Daoists' pay, coerced by ritual and tempted by gilt. Bajie and Sha Monk's aside — that a master of seventy-two transformations must have seventy-two heads to spare — folds the marvel back into the reader's long familiarity with Wukong's arts, and turns terror on the field into a joke between friends.
